Around August 1, 2015 my son Preston informed me that there was something wrong with my fig tree. I was busy studding all I could about citrus disease because there were so many of my calls were about citrus disease and the citrus trees in and around Mesa, were into there fifth year of stress because of the Asian Citrus Leaf Miner, and things that were never a problem before were now wrecking havoc with the health of many of the trees I saw in the course of my dally business.
Anyway I procrastinated for a week until my wife Pat insisted I take a serious look as by then another limb had died.
So the videos on this page are about my efforts to save the fig tree that shades the front south side of our house from the sun here in mesa AZ where temperatures reach in excess of 117 digress in August.
I discovered that the fig tree had a dieses called limb blight and these videos will chronicle my efforts to save it.
Limb Blight:
Limb Blight (fungus – Corticum salmonicolor): Affected limbs wilt rapidly. The fungus enters at a spot along the main or secondary limbs, and all leaves die beyond that point. The fungus enters at a dead fruiting spore or at some other injured spot. All dead twigs and limbs should be removed by pruning so that they will not serve as infection sites.
Limb Blight is a fungus first described in 1873 by Berkeley and Broome. Since that time, this same fungus has been known to have at least five other names which are pink disease of rubber, cacao, citrus, oleander, black pepper, and tea.
Edgerton in 1911 presumably made the first report of the occurrence of this fungus in the United States. It was found on a fig tree.
SYMPTOMS: Characteristically, the fungus appears as a pink or salmon-colored, smooth mycelial mat on branches of its hosts, not too distant from the tip. The fungus mat varies in size from a fraction of an inch to 12 inches or more, usually established unilaterally on the shaded or lower side of affected branches such as is shown. Progressive development of the fungus may lead to an envelopment of the branch, accompanied by a brown discoloration of the cambial layer, and wilting and dying of the leaves.
